Dr. Christoph Heusgen

Ambassador Dr Christoph Heusgen has chaired the Munich Security Conference since 2022. Before taking over the chairmanship of the MSC, he was Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations in New York from 2017 to 2021 and chaired the UN Security Council in April 2019 and July 2020.
Christoph Heusgen studied at the University of St. Gallen, Georgia Southern College in the USA and the Sorbonne in Paris. He completed his doctorate at the University of St. Gallen and currently teaches political science there. In 1980, Ambassador Heusgen joined the Foreign Service.

After working at the German Consulate in Chicago and the German Embassy in Paris, he was appointed Personal Assistant to the Coordinator for Franco-German Co-operation in 1988.
From 1993 to 1997, Christoph Heusgen worked in the ministerial office of Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel, after which he took over as Head of the Europe Division at the Federal Foreign Office for two years. From 1999 to 2005, Heusgen headed the political staff of the European Union's High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana.
Since 2005, he has advised Chancellor Merkel on foreign and security policy issues and headed the Foreign Policy Department at the Federal Chancellery as Director General. Dr Heusgen cultivates an analytical approach to politics, has a sense of humour and can justifiably point to the productive self-confidence of a diplomat.

Ambassador Dr Christoph Heusgen is characterised by discretion and unpretentiousness, he is considered effective and principled.
