Nicola Winter
Former Eurofighter pilot
Nicola Winter knows how people and teams can remain effective when time is short and the pressure is high. A former Eurofighter pilot, now a rescue helicopter pilot, aerospace engineer, and SPIEGEL bestselling author, she combines her experiences from the jet cockpit, McKinsey, and air rescue with practical insights for leadership, team performance, and crisis management.
For over a decade, Nicola Winter served as a fighter pilot in the German Armed Forces. She flew the Tornado and the Eurofighter, was one of only three women in the German Air Force at the time who flew the Eurofighter, and spent several years training pilots in the United States. She ultimately served with the rank of major. The cockpit shaped her understanding of leadership: clear roles, precise communication, disciplined preparation, mutual trust—and the willingness to take responsibility and make decisions even when not all information is available.
After her military career, Winter joined McKinsey & Company and advised large corporations. Today, she flies as a rescue helicopter pilot. As an aerospace engineer, she combines operational experience with analytical depth. As a result, she understands high-performance organizations from three very different perspectives: from the jet cockpit, from management consulting, and from her work in air rescue.
In her presentations, Nicola Winter applies the principles of safety-critical, high-performance environments to everyday business life. She demonstrates how leaders provide direction amid uncertainty, how teams maintain high performance under intense pressure, and how risks are professionally managed. The focus is on leadership and team performance, decision-making under uncertainty, crisis, risk, and stress management, a culture of learning from mistakes and debriefings, resilience, and the ability to adapt to change.
For Nicola Winter, peak performance is not a matter of going it alone. It arises when people can rely on shared standards, communicate openly, take responsibility, and learn from mistakes. Her presentations combine extraordinary insights from aviation, consulting, and air rescue with concrete principles that can be directly applied to leadership, collaboration, and change.
She doesn’t tell a polished hero’s tale. Speaking clearly, authentically, and with humor, she also addresses performance pressure, setbacks, necessary course corrections, and the discipline required to repeatedly adapt to new systems, roles, and teams. The result is talks with substance: personal and inspiring, yet practical and relevant to everyday professional life.
With her book "The Sky Is No Limit", Nicola Winter became a SPIEGEL bestselling author. In 2017, the Boston Consulting Group and *WirtschaftsWoche* named her “Thought Leader of the Year.” In 2025, she received the Bavarian Order of Merit for her courage as a fighter pilot and for serving as an inspiring role model for young people in technical professions.
