Dr. Peter Frey

Peter Frey

Dr Peter Frey is a journalist, former television presenter, author and freelance publicist. From April 2010 to September 2022, he was editor-in-chief of ZDF. He is Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Körber Foundation and has been a radio columnist for the Deutschlandfunk media magazine ‘@mediasres’ (monthly - every first Thursday) since 2024. He gives talks on current affairs and journalism in the digital transformation and continues to be available as an interviewer.
After the longest tenure as editor-in-chief in the broadcaster's history, he is currently devoting himself to many new projects, especially in the German-Polish relationship. He shares his expertise by teaching a course on ‘media in a polarised world’ at the Marie Curie Sklodowska University in Lublin. He has also launched the ‘Crisis Stories’ workshop series, in which German and Polish journalists discuss questions of professional ethics, the future of their profession and society. Partners are the Warsaw Institute for Reportage, the German Journalists' Association DJV and the Körber and Zeit-Stiftung Bucerius foundations.
Peter Frey is also involved in issues relating to the culture of remembrance, particularly in his home town of Bingen am Rhein as a member of the ‘Arbeitskreis jüdisches Bingen’ (Jewish Bingen Working Group).

As in his earlier work on television, he is characterised by clarity and independence of judgement in his lectures and presentations. He continues to enjoy the highest reputation as a journalist and publicist. Dr Frey studied political science, education and Spanish in Mainz (Johannes Gutenberg University) and Madrid (scholarship from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs) from 1978. He obtained his doctorate in 1986 and worked as a presenter for ‘Südwestfunk’ while still a student, as well as in print for ‘Frankfurter Rundschau’ and ‘Die Zeit’. In 1983, he became a ZDF editor and reported for the ‘heute-journal’ programme from Nicaragua, Mexico, Poland and Spain.

From 1988, as personal assistant to the then newly elected ZDF editor-in-chief Klaus Bresser, he was responsible, among other things, for the interview series ‘Was nun, ...?’ (with a political dialogue partner on current events). In 1991, Dr Frey became correspondent and deputy head of the ZDF studio in Washington (the Gulf War was a major topic). From 1992 to 1998 he was head of the ‘ZDF-Morgenmagazin’, from 1998 to 2001 he was head of the ZDF foreign policy department and presented the ‘auslandsjournal’ as well as many special programmes and ‘ZDF Royal’.

From 2001 to 2010, Dr Frey was head of the ZDF capital city studio and presented the programmes ‘Berlin direkt’, ‘ZDF-Sommerinterview’ and ‘Berliner Runde’. He analysed political developments in depth for the ZDF news programmes ‘heute’ and ‘heute-journal’.

As ZDF editor-in-chief, he initiated numerous reforms and innovations and advanced the digitisation of the broadcaster. He remained present on screen as a commentator on ‘heute journal’ and as host of the interview series ‘Was nun, ...?’, in which he interviewed top politicians together with Bettina Schausten. His memories of his work in television include 48 interviews with Angela Merkel, which he conducted over the course of 30 years.
