Prof. Dr. Gabriel Felbermayr
President of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research
Prof. Dr Gabriel Felbermayr is an outstanding Austrian economist, sought-after commentator and, since 1 October 2021, President of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research, Austria's largest think tank. Previously, he was President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) since 1 March 2019.
At the same time, he held a chair in economics at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel. He has published numerous articles in international academic journals, policy briefs and newspapers.
From 2010 to 2019, he worked for the Ifo Institute for Economic Research at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, where he was also a full professor (endowed professorship since 2011) for international economics (economics, in particular real and monetary foreign trade).
As head of the Centre for International Economics at the Ifo Institute, he also researched the effects of the transatlantic free trade agreement TTIP and is critical of the results.
He studied economics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz from 1995 to 2000 (Master's degree with honours). This was followed by research at the European University Institute in Florence (doctorate in 2004). From 2003 to May 2004, Prof Felbermayr worked as a university assistant (Linz), then until 2005 as an associate consultant for McKinsey & Company (Vienna) and from 2005 as a temporary academic councillor at the Eberhard Karls University (Tübingen), where he also completed his habilitation in 2008. This was followed by a professorship in economics, in particular foreign trade, at the University of Hohenheim.

He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, co-editor of the European Economic Review and Associate Editor of the Journal of the European Economic Association.
His research and consulting activities focus on issues of economic global governance, European economic integration and German economic policy.
Prof Felbermayr is regarded as demanding, innovative, confident and ambitious. He represents a new generation of economists who are less ideological but still have a convincing attitude. The time for dogma is over. Economics must base its analyses, diagnoses and recommendations on data, not on fundamental convictions.
He is a master of the media business.
He is a convinced European (‘If we want to be a European democracy, then overcoming nationalism is a central task.’). He prioritises a European solution for climate policy. He is a declared opponent of burgeoning protectionism.
In addition to German, he speaks Italian, French and English.
